This song was written in January 2017 just sitting on my bed after school one day. I remember starting to write this song and feeling really optimistic with the direction it was heading in - it had just seemed to have appeared out of nowhere and was going really well! It didn't take that long to write - I think I finished it over the course of about 2 days. When it eventually came round to recording it, this song was actually left as a demo. I recorded what you hear on the EP on my first day in the studios, and it was one of only 2/3 takes (the whole song all at once) we ever did of it. The producers and I made a joint agreement that this was just going to be one of those songs that has to be left as it is. So we left it pretty much unedited. A bit of reverb on the vocals and general mixing but that's about all there was to it when it came to the overall production of the song.
The general idea of this song is based on hope, and that means it can mean something different for everyone. I always imagine that if 'The Edge of Something Beautiful' was a real-life experience, that it would be like walking up to the top of a hill/mountain/cliff - and you don't quite know what eventually looking down on from the top will be like because you can't see over the edge yet, but you know that you made the effort to hike all the way up there for a reason and you believe the thing that you're waiting on seeing on the other side is so good it's not worth missing. You literally would be at (or almost at) the point of finding out what that wonderful thing is. You could think of it as believing that something you're looking for or working towards will one day be within sight - thus you're not quite there yet but you're at the edge.
Although the 'beautiful' thing I'm waiting on finding in the song is given a human feel (like finding "the one" I suppose), the nice thing about this song is that for each and every listener, your version of 'The Edge of Something Beautiful' might not be a person, but instead working your way up to your dream job, or saving up to go on fantastic holiday etc... something that you can't be 100% sure what it'll be like once you're there but you're pretty sure its worth waiting for.
